The aging Interceptor class torpedo boats remained valuable to the fiscally conservative GRCKN well past their obsolecense as destroyers, and in 1934 half of the ships were refitted and re-equipped for more utilitarian roles better aligned to the ship's age; four were rebuilt as submarine chasers, and two were refitted as minesweepers. Reequipped with diesel engines and now with trunked funnels to reduce weight, the ship's speed, though more modest, was overall improved simply by merit of reliability, as the old machinery was by that point exceedingly troublesome and not worth the time. Notably, some small design variations exist between individual boats, as the refits were partially conducted outside of shipyards given the ship's size simplicity.
In its new role, the refit Interceptors were put to good use on coastal patrol duties, particularly valuable in more domestic roles such as river patrol work and customs inspection duties. Though rarely operating all too far from land, the little Interceptors are an excellent example of the GRCKN's ability to eek out a little more life from a ship class now past 30 years in age.
